TERRE HAUTE — Skateboarders from across Southern Indiana will converge on the Voorhees Skate Park in Terre Haute from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday for the Third Annual Transition Skate Jam.

“This is really a highlight for the year for area skateboarders and fans,” said Michael Ramsey, owner of the Transition Skate Shop in Terre Haute, who is sponsoring the Skate Jam. “It’s a great chance to watch the local kids skate who are really pushing themselves to improve, and also to see some of the best talent in Indiana. It’s exciting to see them all mixed in together.”

The highlight of the day is the skate competition from 3 to 4 p.m., where three skaters at a time take a 60-second trip through the bowl to show their skills for the judges. The competition will be broken into three skill levels, with the advanced level showcasing top talent from across the state. Skaters are expected to arrive from Evansville, Bloomington, Indianapolis, Crawfordsville, Greencastle, Vincennes and Marshall, Ill.

Nick Whitaker skates for the Transition Skate Shop skate team. He will be competing in the advanced division and is excited about the level of talent that should be participating.  “Having so many great skaters together really pushes you to bring out your best effort during the competition,” Whitaker said. “Having a bunch of rippers out here really gets me pumped. It should be a lot of fun to watch.”

The main goal of the Skate Jam is to promote skateboarding in the area, highlight the Voorhees Skate Park and to improve the public perception of skateboarding as a sport.

Live music from Wabash Valley bands will be on stage throughout the afternoon. The Transition Skate Shop is providing free food and drinks, and there will be random free prizes and giveaways throughout the event. Skateboard suppliers and representatives from other skate parks will have merchandise and information for the public.

Registration for those wishing to participate in the skate competition is from 2 to 3 p.m. at the park. The adjudicated competition begins at 3 p.m., starting with the beginner level, then moving on to intermediate and advanced. Presentation of awards will follow the competition at 4 p.m., with awards going to the top three competitors in each group.

Voorhees Skate Park is at Voorhees Street and Prairieton Road in Terre Haute. There is no charge for admission to the event, and no entry fee for the competitors. For more information contact Ramsey at (812) 249-9219 or visit him at the Transition Skate Shop, 2001 S. First St. during business hours.
