HYANNIS Trust me.
Usually, those two little words are attached to slightly sinister things, like nighttime skydiving trips or absurdly spicy pepper-laced dishes.
But really, trust Pink Martini with your night. Itll be adventurous and spicy, sure, but in an absolutely exciting, totally invigorating (not heart-attack-inducing) way.
Lighthearted French ditties? Sure! Heavy, heart-wrenching Croatian ballads? Why not! Schubert inspired by circa-1952 Havana inspired by Gloria Gaynor?
Really, what have you got to lose? Nothing, and here youll have gained the musical equivalent of an around-the-globe journey.
Pink Martinis concoction of tight, spot-on musical numbers and singer Storm Larges booming vocals are sounds for sore, tired-of-pop-star ears, the epitome of what accomplished musicians can do if theyd just stop with the TV judging gigs and focus on their craft.
The groups original singer, China Forbes, was out of the mix at Saturday nights Cape Cod Melody Tent show having vocal surgery. But Southboro-born replacement Large fills Forbes spot with aplomb.
Alright, she was a contestant on the awful Rockstar: Supernova, TV show (hopefully you dont remember). But coming from such an ahem noble background doesnt mean she aint got it.With the sexiness of a lounge singer and the pipes of someone who wouldnt be out of place at the Met, Large is the perfect leader-cum-pinup girl for Pink Martini.
And when carousing with guest singer Ari Shapiro yes, he of NPR fame, in a delightful turn on the stage she shows her chops as a comedienne, too.
Youre such a joiner, Large pipes up after Shapiro jokes about wanting to be Judy Garland as a young boy.
The song they sing together in homage to Garland, Get Happy, is beautiful, and on Sympathique, a Pink Martini original, theyre perfect.
This is the sort of music to play when impressing your friends at a dinner party. Theyll be in awe, even if you did buy their meals at a takeout Indian place.
And really, thats what Pink Martinis all about. Even during its deeper moments a moving duet by virtuoso pianist Thomas Lauderdale and violinist Nicholas Crosa on a Mozart concerto theres an absolutely astounding amount of talent.
As for the quality of the 12-piece band, suffice it to say that this mini-orchestra makes the large version look obsolete.
Pink Martinis perfect mastery of music and ability to turn even the most difficult classical piece on its side is a rare combination in this day and age of bands named after singers and self-titled albums.
But as my companion at the concert said, the good men and women of Pink Martini arent celebrities theyre musicians.
