Eighteen musicians from the eastern regions of Asia will be visiting Charleston, Ill., and some Wabash Valley schools as part of Arts Midwest World Fest.

The visiting group, Tarim, a music and dance ensemble that resides in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the Peoples Republic of China, will keep a busy schedule during its weeklong residency, traveling to schools and sharing its music and culture.

Scheduled communities include Casey, Kansas, Marshall and Oakland. Tarim will also visit Lake Land College in Mattoon and the LifeSpan Center in Charleston.

Tarim is an outstanding group of musicians, said Dan Crews, publicity director at the Doudna. Their wonderful melodies and beautiful costumes will really thrill audiences. Its going to be a real treat for those who attend the workshops and final concert.

This is the second Arts Midwest WorldFest group to visit the area. The Yamma Ensemble from Israel was in residence during the fall 2011 semester.

Crews said the goal of the World Fest program is to present high-caliber international artists to smaller communities in order to foster an understanding of and appreciation for global uniqueness and differences.

Two other groups will visit the community during the fall of 2012 and in the spring of 2013. Organizations interested in hosting a workshop should contact the Doudna Fine Arts Center at (217) 581-2113.
