TERRE HAUTE — Contemplate the joys and challenges of our time through the University Art Gallerys exhibit, Collecting in the 21st Century: Recent Acquisitions, 2001-2013 on display through Sept. 20 on the Indiana State University campus.
The exhibition includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Motherwell, Jeff Koons and many others. Many of the works are on display for the first time.
A new hire/closing reception, sponsored by Interdisciplinary Programs and ISUs quality of life initiative, is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Sept. 18. T

NEW YORK—According to its mission statement, the Society of Illustrators was founded in 1901 to “promote generally the art of illustration and to hold exhibitions from time to time.”
This month, the Society is outdoing itself with three concurrent exhibits featuring the work of three well-published illustrators, each as different from the other as he is talented.
The largest of the three exhibits, “The Vision of George Stavrinos” features over 100 illustrations highlighting Stavrinos’s career as a fashion illustrator and draftsman.

Music, wheels, food, arts and crafts, games and high-flying fun highlight the third annual Downtown Terre Haute Block Party on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to midnight. The Block Party spans Wabash Avenue from Fourth to Ninth streets and features five stages of live entertainment. Event admission and stage entertainment are free.
The event is designed to bring the community together in a party atmosphere and to welcome students and newcomers to the city.
“Events like the Downtown Terre Haute Block Party allows us to come together and celebrate who we are, what we have done, and where we are going as a community,” said Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett.

Here comes the bride — “The Princess Bride” — as you’ve never experienced it before.
The 1987 cult hit — a tale of love and adventure recounted by a grandfather to his ailing grandson — will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Los Angeles. The twist? Director Rob Reiner and star Cary Elwes will be there to provide live commentary as the film is shown. Like a Blu-ray extra come to life, they’ll share anecdotes and behind-the-scenes gossip.
Jason Reitman, who directed “Juno,” “Up in the Air” and “Thank You for Smoking,” will host the evening, which will take place in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

An Evening of Art & Wine featuring the art of Kathy M. Matlock is scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 16, in theSullivan County Learning Center at 2110 N. Hospital Blvd., Suite 1, in Sullivan.
Matlocks art will be displayed and available for purchase, with 20 percent of art sales going to the Ivy Tech Foundation.The event is sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College.
Matlock was born and raised in Sullivan County and has recently returned to the Wabash Valley from Oregon. She has always been interested in and dabbled in art and, through a chance meeting with artist Eloise Lovell, she was inspired to expand her horizons.
Matlock works mostly with acrylics, and has recently begun to use graphite and watercolor in her art.
